Liberal Democrat MP Claire Young has tabled a motion in Parliament, raising the challenges of accessing electric vehicle (EV) charging points and the high costs for those who can’t charge at home. It calls on the government to do more to do more to reduce the cost of charging and to support the rollout of charging points.

In her motion, which is supported by 20 MPs, she outlines the challenges facing people who cannot charge at home, due to lack of infrastructure, even in newly built properties.

The Thornbury & Yate MP has warned that unless the government takes action now to boost the number of charging points, reduce costs, and support at home charging, many people will be locked out of making the switch to an EV.

Claire Young MP said:

“Electric vehicles are becoming more and more common on our roads. Yet despite the increasing number of people making the switch, the infrastructure needed to support their use just isn’t keeping pace.

“A key limitation is the ability to access charging points, both at home and when out and about. While we have seen some commercial charging points being established many homes – even new-builds - do not have the ability to charge an EV overnight.

“This means those with an electric vehicle, especially in rural areas like ours, are left reliant upon the small number of public charging stations who charge a much higher fee than you could otherwise pay if you could do it yourself at home.

“There needs to be a real focus on this from the Government. That is why my motion aims to raise this issue directly in Parliament. I just hope Ministers will listen and agree to step up to the plate.”
