Thornbury and Yate MP Claire Young says she is urgently seeking a meeting with Lloyds Bank after it announced of the closure of its Thornbury Branch.

The closure is due to take place at the end of February 2026, and will leave the town without a local bank branch.

In the last 6 years, Thornbury has lost branches of HSBC, TSB, Nat West and Barclays. The nearest Lloyds after the closure will be Yate, 10 miles away. Lloyds is also closing its Patchway branch.

If Lloyds does close its Thornbury branch then the aim is to establish a new ‘banking hub’. The hub would be run by the Post Office and host a number of high street bank outlets.

Ms Young also plans to meet with Cash Access UK, the non-profit organisation that provides cash and basic banking services through the new banking hubs.

She said: “I am hugely disappointed that Lloyds has decided to close its Thornbury branch. Many people still rely on face-to-face counter services to do their banking, so I am urging Lloyds to reconsider.

“I’ll be meeting with the organisation behind the banking hub proposal to ensure they can find premises and get up and running quickly so we can minimise the disruption.

“Many people will not be able to easily travel to Yate in order to do their banking. If the Lloyds branch does close, we have to ensure there is a feasible alternative so Thornbury residents are not left cut off.”

Claire has launched a petition against the closure which concerned residents can sign at: claireyoung.org.uk/thornbury-lloyds
