The Liberal Democrats have been fighting for the interests of older people at the recent Full Meeting of South Gloucestershire Council. Following the great success of Yate Town Council in receiving Age Friendly Status and their Aging Better initiative to help people who are 50+ to lead active, happy and healthy lifestyles, the Lib Dems successfully called on South Gloucestershire Council to seek Age Friendly status.

Cllr Ben Nutland (Yate North) said:

“We’ve seen the benefits this has brought to the people of Yate, bringing together community groups to inspire and empower people to have voices in their communities. We would love to see that replicated across South Gloucestershire.

“The current South Gloucestershire Ageing Better Plan ends in 2023. Now seems the right time to focus on the next steps to support our residents as they age - listening to them and their wants and needs.”

Cllr Maggie Tyrrell (Thornbury) said:

“We are delighted that the council will now follow Yate’s lead in becoming an Age Friendly area. Age-friendly communities are places where age is not a barrier to living well. Helping people participate in society and be valued for their contribution – ensuring they feel safe, comfortable and secure at home with access quality health and care.”
