Lib Dems challenge Conservative economic disaster
Liberal Democrats challenged South Gloucestershire Conservatives on their Government’s disastrous mini budget and mishandling of the Energy Crisis in the Full Council Meeting on 12th October.
In a series of questions, they hit out at the far-reaching implications to all areas of council services. This comes after the Council announced it had a forecast deficit of £29m for next year and would need to cut services and jobs.
Cllr Claire Young, Leader of the Lib Dem Opposition Group, said:
“The cost-of-living crisis is not just devastating to residents but seriously damages the council’s ability to support the most vulnerable members of our community. As the answers to our questions show, every part of the council will be affected. The Conservative Government’s disastrous mini budget, added to their mishandling of the energy crisis, threaten the services people rely on.”
Cllr Jon Lean said:
“The South Glos residents who are already struggling to make ends meet will be badly affected by the disastrous mini-budget. The freezing of the thresholds of income tax will disproportionately affect those on low incomes, while rising mortgage costs will hurt home owners and push up rents for others. Are the conservative councillors here in South Gloucestershire happy to represent a party whose policies are so damaging to all but the very rich?"
