Liberal Democrat MP for Thornbury & Yate Claire Young has voted against the Government’s plans to cut the Winter Fuel Payment, with the Labour Government committing to continuing with the move.

Speaking after the vote, Claire Young MP said:

“Pensioners across South Gloucestershire are worried sick about how they will be able to keep the heating on this winter.

“The Labour Government is callously pushing ahead with this plan, which will see some of the most vulnerable blindsided with a £300 cut in support – just as bills are set to rise.

“The Conservatives damage to our economy is unforgivable, but cutting vital winter fuel support is no way to bring about the change the country deserves.

“I voted to block these damaging plans today and was proud to stand up for local pensioners who are now at risk of an even harsher winter cost of living squeeze.

“Liberal Democrats will keep fighting at every opportunity to reverse this cut and to bring about the real change people want to see.”
